  2. Let me tell you all a little story. It comes from the world of Linguistics, but it’s about the Marx brother.

    I’m preparing a little contribution for Talking People, on slang words ending in “-o” (e.g. a weirdo, somebody who is weird, odd, strange, eccentric, crazy), so I’ve been reading a bit stuff from Linguistics. And I came across an interesting piece of information, which I thought you’d like to read! – The Marx Brothers are mentioned! Why? Because their names fall into the cases which are studied!

    GROUCHO – somebody who grouches? from “grouch” – see how this is pronounced and its definition here: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/grouch
    HARPO – somebody who plays the harp?
    CHICO – somebody who likes “chicks”? “Chicks” is a derogatory term for women. It’s like “pollitas”. Then, there’s a very common set of words: “Dogs are a chick magnet”, a message for men, to tell them that if they get a dog, they’ll pick up “chicks”.
